The Estate Chardonnay represents their entire planted acreage, thus provides the most complete expression of Chardonnay from their estate in each vintage. They make their picking decisions with tension and vibrancy favored over opulence and richness, as they believe this gives them the best expression of their sense of place. This wine will benefit from cellaring for at least three years and/or decanting a few hours ahead of time.
When their family arrived at Bethel Heights in 1977 they found a flourishing ecosystem in place: healthy living soils, a stream running through a shady ravine fed by a pure clean spring, and a rich diversity of wildlife with which they try to live in peace. Above all else they seek to grow their grapes and make their wine without diminishing the vibrant life of this place.
Their vineyard is farmed on active hope for the future – the future of their farmland, and the future of all their children. They have farmed without herbicides since 2009. They work to build resilience in the landscape, stability in the watershed, and justice for the people who work the land.
Over the years they have joined forces with their neighbors and colleagues in collaborative efforts to promote sustainability in their landscape.
Bethel Heights has long been on the forefront in the fight for farmland protection in Oregon, a never-ending battle against urban sprawl. Ironically, the new battle now is to protect habitat and biodiversity from farmland sprawl, which is why in 2017 Bethel Heights became one of the founders of the The Willamette Valley Oak Accord, bringing together private landowners around a commitment to protect and restore some of the last remaining oak habitat in the Valley.
