The soul of the estate, 40% of their total production: approximately 20,000 bottles. Aged in barrels for 14 to 24 months depending on the vintage. Structured, fine and elegant wine. Can be drunk young but 10 years of cellaring can only be beneficial – 15 to 30 years of cellaring minimum.
Jean-François Chaigneau chose to be a winegrower and brought his brother Philippe into his passion. For them, quality and authenticity are the key words to give birth to Natural Wines of great character, expressions of their original terroirs. In the year 2000, the Chaigneau Family wanted to make natural wine. Meteorology being essential in the cultivation of vines, it was in Barsac in Gironde, thirty kilometers south-east of Bordeaux , that they fell in love with Château Massereau. Former 16th century estate of the Dukes of Epernon, Château Massereau benefits from a specific microclimate at the confluence of the Ciron and the Garonne. In the fall, morning fogs form with strong sunshine in the afternoon. The conditions are favorable to the development of "Botrytis Cinerea" which concentrates the sugar from the grapes and allows the production of sweet wine. Barsac is also Les Graves. A terroir where the gravel in the evening returns to the vines the heat of the sun stored during the day. A land bordered to the west and south by the pine forest which protects it from bad weather, to the east by the Garonne which plays a role of thermal regulator.
Château Massereau is extreme viticulture practiced with passion. The constant search for improvement at all stages of the production of original and naturally authentic wines.
