Keep it natural, baby.
Is there any wine grape more punk rock than Mondeuse? Dark as night with face-ripping tannins, aromatics of marijuana, turned loam, black licorice and sandalwood incense that will make your neck snap back. Despite the heavy-vibes, its light in body like licking a watermelon rind. High wire acidity will let this demon live for decades to come. Manzanita, blue and black fruit preserves freshened with menthol and splashed with soy sauce on a backbone of iron, metal and blood.
Grown on the Rorick estate vineyard in Calaveras County, on soils comprised of a layer of schist over dolomite-rich limestone. Elevation of the vineyard is 2000’. The combination of limestone, elevation, and the cold nights of the Sierras produce fruit with depth, texture, and brilliant natural acidity; minimal handling in the winery allows for an honest and pure expression of site and variety to shine through. The Mondeuse they cultivate was propagated with cuttings provided by Carole Meredith and Steve Lagier, who have been longtime champions of this oft overlooked variety which has a history in California stretching back to the mid 1800s. In 2018 their Mondeuse was hand-picked and fermented in a single open-top vessel with 100% stem inclusion; vigorous pigeage was undertaken to break up the clusters upon reception. The must received pigeage and/or punchdowns twice daily; fermentation lasted 14 days at which time the wine was pressed down to four well aged (neutral) 227L barriques (one barrel becomes the Ghost Zero). The wine was racked off lees at 16 months and saw a total of 18 months elevage. Bottled unfined and unfiltered. As with all Forlorn Hope wines, no new oak is utilized, and nothing was added to the must or wine (no cultured yeast, ML bacteria, water, tartaric acid, enzymes, nutrients, etc) with the exception of minimal effective SO2.
