Keep it natural, baby.
Wine Notes: Made from skin macerated Pinot Gris, the Meinklang Foam is an orange sparkling wine with bright aromas and complex flavors (yellow-fleshed fruit, hints of olive, etc.). There is a wonderful balance on the palate between the refreshingly crisp acidity and the creaminess from the lees contact (6-8 months on fine lees).
Fruit Source: The Pinot Gris comes from Meinklang's Graupert Vineyard. This vineyard is special because it is not pruned; the Pinot Gris has the total freedom to grow and climb according to the vines’ basic instincts. The vines regulate their yield themselves. This leads to an above-average amount of grapes to ripen as very small berries, yielding a harvest which is smaller than usual as a result. The significant advantage of this is that the small berries have a higher skin-to-pulp ratio, therefore providing more aroma, extract and complexity in the wine. The name Graupert comes from the Burgenland dialect which older people use to describe someone slightly scruffy looking.
The Michlits family runs the Meinklang farm which is a wide and varied Demeter-certified agricultural operation cultivating a number of different crops as well as raising 300 Angus cattle. The estate represents what used to be common practice everywhere in the Pannonian countryside: a mixed farming operation, managed by extended family. The wine estate is well integrated into the farm and lead by Angela and Werner Michlits.
