This 3rd vintage of PTG marks a very big change from previousyears in that this wine is now made from 100% Patton ValleyVineyard fruit.
It is an important step for us, and confirms ourcommitment to making this delightful wine, fully embracingthis unusual, unheralded style that is so wonderfully unique. As before, we co-fermented the lot under heavy CO2 usingcarbonic fermentation for 20 days. Then the wine was pressed tobarrel to finish primary fermentation with native yeasts whereit sat for one single day. To nudge it along, we carefully pigeage3 times before racking to barrel. The wine started Malolacticfermentation, but was shut down to preserve freshness andvibrancy. This isn’t exactly how most people make red wine, butwe aren’t most people. The style is meant to be fresh, lively, andwholly unlike anything else, and it delivers on all counts. We farm organically under LIVE guidelines which allows theecosystem to thrive without being blotted out by syntheticchemicals. Without noxious pesticides, farming here takes a lotof work. It is this hands-on approach that keeps us very busyand our vines very happy. In the winery we are hands-off, doing as little as possible tointerfere with nature’s course. This approach gives our winestheir own voice, register, and timbre.
Put this wine in the fridge for 30 minutes before you drink it,and the results will be magic. The nose is all berry-berry-patchHood Strawberries, with the earth fresh and tilled beneath you.Raspberry, ruby red grapefruit, lemon and orange peel flit aboutthe nose and the palate, with just the right amount of structureto suggest very good posture and grace. Call it a Summer red, aplayful food wine, a wizard of many colors, but don’t call itsimple. This is a wine with multiple personalities. In a goodway.150 Cases Produced
The long-time dream of friends Monte Pitt & Dave Chen, the Patton Valley Vineyard is a unique and delightful slice of grape growing heaven, on top of a little outcropping in the foothills of the Coast Range at an elevation of 300-500 feet. Our vineyard has ample sun, cool breezes, and slopes to every aspect with a single soil type called Laurelwood. It’s basically paradise. Planted in 1997, this clonally-diverse site has been producing some of the most elegant wines in the Willamette Valley for over two decades.
In the winery, by contrast, they are hands-off, fermenting under native yeasts and bottling without filtering or fining. This gives their site, their fruit, and their wines the loudest voice in the room, rather than being drowned out by process. Its an honest, simple approach.
Patton Valley Vineyard became a B Corporation in June of 2017, firmly aligning their business as a force for good, and to compliment our sustainable production ethos.
